It’s pledge drive time again on the local public radio stations (shameless promotion for my favorite, left) and during this campaign I’ve been struck by the fact that they’re always talking about the value they bring to you, the listener. With each song and news cast and interview the pitch is made about how these things enrich your life, dear listener. They share stories from listeners who, just like me and you, have experienced something special, something of value, simply by listening to the radio, or watching the program.
It reminded me of a recent conversation with an impressive executive whose organizational responsibility and role continue to expand. The reason, he explained, is because he brings value in many, different and unique ways.
This is the differentiator in business, it’s all about delivering value.
I’m listening differently to the pledge drives now and thinking about the value that I deliver for my clients. I’ve been called a confidence catalyst, a personal MBA, and a champion for uncovering ways to see what’s possible and get there. Sometimes the value I bring is to barricade your office door so that you can completely think through critical strategy and next moves. I give you feedback that others won’t so you conquer behavioral blind spots, which is why one client called me “the salt in his wound” and why another said, “she will push you.” You can count on it.
The next time you hear a public radio pledge drive, think about the value that YOU deliver, then share it.
